Your journey into the world of embroidery begins with choosing the right tools and supplies. I will cover each of these items in detail, but here is a quick list to give you an idea of what you will need. Along the way, I’ll provide tips for keeping your new favorite pastime budget-friendly. I also offer convenient preassembled embroidery bundles to make getting started easy and fun.
1. Fabric: For beginners, cotton or linen are both fantastic options. They’re easy to work with and provide a beautiful finished look.
2. Floss and Thread: I recommend starting with 6-strand cotton embroidery floss for surface embroidery. This isn't your only thread option, but the best place to start.
3. Needles: Either chenille or embroidery (crewel) needles are perfect for threading that lovely 6-strand floss. I’ll also share tips on selecting the right needle size.
4. Embroidery Hoop: A traditional round embroidery hoop is ideal for beginners. Look for a 5 or 6-inch hoop, whether wooden or plastic; there are benefits to both.
5. Design Outline or Pattern: Using an outline is the best way to get started! With countless designs available or the option to create your own, you’ll never run out of inspiration.
6. Transfer Method: Transferring the design outline from paper to fabric can be accomplished in a number of ways. I’ll provide some clear techniques to simplify the process.
7. Iron: While not mandatory, an iron can be a handy tool for working with fabric, ensuring everything looks pristine.
8. Sharp Scissors & Miscellaneous Supplies: A good pair of fabric scissors and some small snips for thread will make your experience much smoother. There are also a few additional tools that may not be essential but can truly enhance your crafting experience.
