The Inspiration
I have always loved pumpkins, and I think it's partly because I live for fall and my blood type is pumpkin spice! However, my inspiration for this design actually came from an accidental pumpkin patch in our horse pasture. A neighbor of ours had a pumpkin patch and sold pumpkins every fall. One year, as he was driving by, a couple of pumpkins fell off his trailer and rolled into our ditch. He told us to keep them, so we displayed them for a while, but eventually, we tossed them out for the horses to kick around.
It's not every day you get a black cat to hang out next to a pumpkin. If only I had a little witch's hat for his head.
The following spring, we discovered we had our own pumpkin patch. The randomly scattered pumpkin seeds found their way into the well-fertilized ground and grew like crazy. I wasn't interested in selling the pumpkins, but I didn't want them to go to waste either. Thankfully, we were able to donate them to a charity, and they sold them all! I did hold a few pumpkins back to see if I could grow them again, but the results were not as good. By the third year, we didn't harvest any pumpkins.
The pumpkin and leaves here are from our pasture.
Colorful Pumpkins
Right after I stitched the orange pumpkin trio, I felt inspired to create the same design using trendy decor colors. I had often seen pumpkins in off-white and a blueish turquoise shade in home decor. While I knew that white pumpkins were real, I always thought blueish pumpkins were just a way to complement the orange color. However, about a year after stitching the trendy pumpkin design, I saw a blueish pumpkin in real life. I was so shocked that I went full teenage girl for a moment, exclaiming, "What the??? No way, shut up, shut up!" (though nobody else was talking).
My husband and I were visiting his mom when we encountered this blueish pumpkin. She had several unique pumpkins displayed in front of her home. She has always maintained a flourishing garden, but had just started growing a number of pumpkin varieties that year, including bluish, peach, and off-white pumpkins. Unfortunately, I can't remember the names or variety of the pumpkins.
Aren't the uniquely colored pumpkins just delightful? I must say, though, the thread colors I picked for my trendy designs didn't quite hit the mark for me. I'm considering tweaking the pattern a bit and creating something fresh. This will give me a chance to explore a broader color palette. While I haven’t dove into the specific changes yet, I’m eager to incorporate more colors beyond just green and orange. The possibilities are endless.
